Festival history
The old walls of Istanbul seem to be a ruin, but behind the crumbled stones all sorts of people still live. Here, in this apparent oasis of peace and quiet, they can live undisturbed, in relative seclusion. The impressionistic documentary points the camera at everyday scenes: laundry flaps, with a cute green dress and tights dangling from pegs, a few birds fly up, the rain keeps dripping on the cobblestones, and the autumn leaves flutter. An old couch stands discarded in the street, just like a rickety bedstead that only attracts the attention of a curious cat. Meanwhile, a bricklayer repairs a piece of wall, doors seem to shut themselves and the laundry is taken in again. The initially chock-full carts now pass through the gate empty, accompanied by peaceful music that sounds like the laundry blowing softly about. Outside the walls, the stream of traffic keeps rushing by.
