SERGEI EISENSTEIN. POST SCRIPTUM. This film is chosen for two reasons: Eisenstein was born in Riga and next year is his 100th birthday. This film from 1979 is not an up-to-date film and therefore has the quality of never getting older.
Ansis Epners is one of Latvia's foremost directors. Born in 1937 in Riga, graduated from Riga's University as a philologist, he also studied in the Cinematography Institute in Moscow.
This key film of the 'perestroika' (economic restructuring) contrasts over-enthusiastic voluntarism with realistic images of Soviet youngsters escaping into drugs, religious sects, punk fashion and rock music. The film even exposes the disillusionment of Soviet soldiers returning from Afghanistan, and has provoked a fundamental debate beyond Latvia, throughout the Soviet Union.
