Festival history
Thanks to choreographer Miranda Pennell, you can even discover dance in the rigid walls, straight hallways and geometric patterns of the modular ceiling at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music. Everything appears to be completely under control. The camera gradually rolls through the building and studies the creative power of the young musicians who rehearse there. The drummer plays an electric set while wearing headphones. The musical result makes one think of a prisoner looking for contact with his fellow inmates by banging on the pipes, but his concentrated face reflects a rich internal world. More and more drummers come into view, in their minds, they're rockers. Their creative energy slowly but surely fills the room as we also catch amplified snippets of their rhythms. In another room, guitarists take over. Once again, the auditory perspective is detached from the camerawork. Occasionally, we can hear something from the headphones of one of the musicians, but then the soundtrack returns to a conversation between the other guitarists. Next, we move on to the vocalists, where an isolated boy lets out a protracted cry. Finally, we hear the ensemble: drums, guitars and song at full force. But before long, this sensory pleasure is contained.
