Festival history

It’s 2015, and a group of members of the huge Landless Workers’ Movement in Brazil has occupied a plot of land near a factory. They’re fighting against unequal rights to agricultural land, and demanding land for themselves. Major landowners focus mainly on large-scale agriculture; the impoverished population fears the consequences of monoculture and the use of insecticides.

We follow the group over the course of four years as they live out their lives in an improvised camp, where they work the land, devise strategies and dream of a better world. The rhythm is calm, with the camera alternating between gorgeous long shots and close-ups of weathered faces. These people are clearly connected with their land, but totally at the mercy of the caprices of national politics and the global economy. The texts shown at the end of the film give little reason for hope: the new President of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro calls on landowners to defend their property—with violence if necessary—and describes members of the Landless Workers’ Movement as enemies of the state.
