Festival history
Taking the form of a detective story, this documentary reveals the facts of the case of the kidnapping of a young mother, whose age is kept vague for a long time. On 1 April 2000, her brother reported the abduction of Ming’e, who was being forced to marry a farmer. The police liberated her and she made the headlines in all the Chinese newspapers. People even started donating money to her, because they sympathised with this underage mother of a fourteen-month-old boy. But her brother calls the child ‘a heavy burden on us both’ and advocates adoption. A reporter from a TV programme starts an investigation and finds out that matters are not at all what they seem. The contradictory statements from all of those involved are compared and contrasted in the film, making the underlying tragedy more and more complex.
