Festival history
The inhabitants of the desertlike Andes in North Chile have the custom of erecting an altar on the spot where someone has unexpectedly died. AMOR...NO! interweaves that tradition with the concrete stories about three cases of sudden death. Marjory, who was taken away from her lover and killed in the desert; Julio, who passed away on the commemoration day of the patron saint of his birth village that had meanwhile been deserted; Salvador, who was shot while chalking slogans for justice. The next of kin think and act as if the deceased is still alive. Visitors to the altars beseech the spirit of the dead for help and inspiration. Sometimes they get what they ask for; in that case, the dead person is worshipped like a saint.
