Festival history

Brian Eno’s influence on the development of pop music cannot be overestimated. His synthesizers defined the sound of Roxy Music in the early seventies. As a producer, he worked with the likes of David Bowie, Talking Heads and U2. Eno pioneered the genre of ambient music, and has released over 40 solo and collaborative albums.

For this cinematic portrait of the British musician, composer and artist, filmmaker Gary Hustwit and digital artist Brendan Dawes developed a generative software platform that dynamically combines original interviews with Eno’s archive of unreleased footage and music, resulting in billions of possible iterations.

Each version of the film features a different mix of Eno’s ideas about subjects ranging from the nature of creativity, using evolution as a source of inspiration, and his career which he describes as “an exploration of interesting ways to fail.” This innovative approach fits seamlessly with Eno’s own computer-controlled “generative music,” which constantly changes. Rarely in a biographical documentary has form so aptly matched content.
