Festival history

In 2014, the body of the black teenager Lennon Lacy was found hanging from a swing set in Bladenboro, North Carolina. The local police concluded it was suicide, but Lacy’s friends and family believed he was lynched by racists. When mistakes in the local police investigation came to light, the FBI was called in.

The mysterious death of Lennon Lacy is the starting point for a probing exposé on the history (and topicality) of lynch mobs in the American South. We visit the city of Monroe, Georgia, where every year the lynching of four black people in 1946 is reenacted in memory of the victims. Historians discuss racist terrorism, and the daughter of a former Ku Klux Klan leader explains how as a child she witnessed horrific murders.

Beginning like an episode of a true crime series, Always in Season gradually becomes a thought-provoking account of the deep roots of racist violence.
