Video Report: We Are X

Interview with X Japan frontman Yoshiki Hayashi and director Stephen Kijak at the Amstel Hotel. The documentary We Are X, a Sundance winner, shows the fitful history of the hardrock band X Japan, immensely popular at home. In the late 1980s, they are the trailblazers of visual kei, a subculture of flamboyantly dressed, androgynous musicians with a lot of make-up and garish hairdos. In 1997, internal quarrels, the death of a band member and the constant depression of drummer and co-founder Yoshiki heralded the demise of the band. But in 2007, they are resurrected; the documentary ends with the glorius performance of X Japan at Madison Square Garden in October 2014.
