Jury Report: IDFA Competition for Kids & Docs 2016

The jury found it extremely hard to choose between 13 films that varied hugely in length, form and subject matter. From a series of one minute animated shorts, a 13-minute film made entirely of photographs to feature-length documentaries on themes such as murder fantasies in Holland, eagle hunters in Mongolia, German girl wrestlers under pressure to living with chronic epilepsy in Norway – the variety was astonishing. It was very inspiring and touching to watch all the dilemmas unfold. Such as standing up to your racist older brother, fighting against gender roles in your society, keeping your sense of humor when you’ve fled your country and looking after your mentally ill mother. In having to select two films, the jury discussed storytelling technique, style and above all authenticity and how each story would speak to a young audience.

IDFA Special Jury Award for Childrens' Documentary
A film whose protagonist stays with you long after the film has ended. A story about coming to terms with your reality and forgiving someone despite being abandoned. This film shows a troubled parent-child relationship that the jury believes many children will relate to. The main character inspires by showing bravery, no self-pity and the determination to trust again.
The IDFA Special Jury Award for Children's Documentary goes to Naomi’s Secret by Saskia Gubbels.

IDFA Award for Best Children’s Documentary
In a time where we feel the pressure to profile ourselves on social media, to be hip and happy constantly, the main character shows us a hidden world of loneliness and the inability to relate to others. Three teenage boys take care of each other through times of depression and self-harm. We experience male friendship with a freshness and intimacy that is rare.
The IDFA Award for Best Children’s Documentary goes to Rocknrollers by Daan Bol.
