Ally Derks receives Pioneer Award
December 12, 2016 | Over the weekend, Ally Derks received a prestigious Pioneer Award from the International Documentary Association. Derks was awarded for founding IDFA, which grew from a small festival in 1988 to the most renowned documentary film festival in the world.
The Pioneer Awards are handed out by the International Documentary Association every year, and are given to "acknowledges extraordinary contributions to advancing the nonfiction form and providing exceptional vision and leadership to the documentary community". Derks was handed the award by Diane Weyermann, executive vice president documentary for Participant Media, who said that Derks has created a "documentaire mecca". Derks thanked the IDFA team in her speech.
Ally Derks founded IDFA in 1988 and will depart from her role as festival director in 2017, after 30 years at the helm of the festival.
