A special live edition of the Operator Radio show cccriojo*, a platform for so-called fugitive spaces: spaces that resist colonial logics and create room for alternative ways of being, knowing, and imagining. This interdisciplinary program looks into the ongoing legacy of colonialism and its effects on the present.

At the centre of the evening is the question of who gets to shape the digital spaces where Afro-European knowledge and identity are formed. Cameroonian artist Sondi examines how power, narratives, and biases function in virtual environments through world-building and worlding in digital spaces and video games. French media artist DIVA explores memory and the reconstruction of identity through film and immersive multi-channel video installations. Her video installation [The Black Man in the Cosmos] (2019) is a reflection on the Black French experience, a perspective that remains underrepresented in international artistic discourse.

About the program
[The Black Man in the Cosmos] (DIVA, 2019)
This video installation connects jazz musician Sun Ra’s Afrofuturist visions and the 1974 film Space Is the Place to the 2016 protests in France prompted by the death of Adama Traoré, following his heavy-handed arrest. Artist DIVA links this archival material with the incendiary here and now, blending mythology and historical narrative.

Sondi is a Cameroon-born and Netherlands-based artist and researcher. Her practice centers on worldbuilding and worlding, particularly within digital spaces and video games. She examines how power and narratives operate within virtual environments, tracing encoded biases, algorithmic discrimination, game mechanics, and the portrayal of people, places, and ecologies, while crafting worlds that foreground marginalised voices and perspectives often excluded from our techno-futures.

Afaina de Jong is an Amsterdam-based architect. Her studio AFARAI has worked for renowned institutions such as Rijksmuseum, Venice Biennale and Van Gogh Museum. Her work is deeply connected to represent people and cultural movements that are often underrepresented in architectural form. She situates her work in the public realm as part of the collective imaginary. Her discourse is international and intersectional, connecting counterculture with architecture.

Gita Buhari is an Amsterdam-based creative, event host, moderator, trainer and musician. Her practice is rooted in bringing different perspectives together and centring marginalised voices. With experience at organisations including The Black Archives and Sexmatters, she creates space for nuanced conversations around complex and often overlooked subjects.
