IDFA Meets at Motormond: Flight is Organizing Towards Flight
Description

The second part of the IDFA Meets Motormond program continues at Motormond’s new Art Space at Surinameplein. Featuring rare protest posters sourced from the Johannesburg archives, the exhibition Flight is Organizing Towards Flight centers the powerful iconography used by liberation movements in South Africa to communicate their calls and vision for change.

Central to this second part is the near-hour-long sonic lecture, curated by Motormond and visual and sonic storyteller Lesedi Mogoatlh. Not a didactic piece, the lecture aims to mirror the setting and the mood in the run-up to the fall of Apartheid in South Africa, using a mix of speeches, songs, radio programs, and other found audio. Set against the backdrop of protest posters the sound piece, much like Agnès Varda’s Black Panthers, offers a window into a revolutionary movement's self-representation and allows their voices to speak for themselves through their own symbols, sounds, and stories.

IDFA Meets is a program line that’s experimental at heart and interdisciplinary by nature. It brings together collaborations with creative partners from across the cultural field to connect with a new generation of curious minds with a passion for arts and culture.

As a not-for-profit art space, Motormond is dedicated to circulating Pan-Diaspora cultures and fostering solidarity among BIPOC and Queer communities. Through cultural expressions that center resistance and liberation, it creates spaces for dialogue and connection across borders.
