Little, Big and Far presented by film critic Dana Linssen
Little, Big and Far presented by film critic Dana Linssen
Description

Award winning American director Jem Cohen is one of those filmmakers whose work repeatedly reminds you of the importance of looking, watching, seeing. Of things that are otherwise overlooked. At light reflections and mirages, almost as if the camera lens reveals a world we can't perceive with the naked eye. Along with filmmakers like Chris Marker and Agnès Varda, he feels like a kindred spirit to the film critic, though the critic can often envy what they've already seen with their cameras before they've even opened their pens.

Little, Big and Far is now finally being shown on a large screen in the Netherlands, preceded by an introduction by NRC film critic Dana Linssen. She connects the themes from the film and Cohen's other works through associative "powers of ten"—scientific, philosophical, poetic, and political.

Dana Linssen is a film critic for NRC, lecturer in film & dramaturgy at HKU and ArtEZ University of the Arts, and, as part of the Slow Criticism Project, a curator of small interventions that counter the commodification of film and film criticism. In 2015, she wrote the libretto for composer Maarten Ornstein's particle cantata Creator/Destroyer, about the discovery of the Higgs boson, but her interest in the smallest particles and the most distant stars dates back to the time she herself arrived on this planet.

Little, Big, and Far

Wonder drives this docufiction about an Austrian astronomer, adrift in his personal life, as he searches a Greek island for the darkest place to see the stars. A curious film about paying close attention to the small, the vast, and the distant.
