Harun Farocki's love for stories on human labor shines through in this pairing of An Image (1983) and Industry and Photography (1979). The images we consume are not always a window into reality, they are often the products of meticulously thought out and crafted campaigns.
Visually these films move from the silent, frozen world of the industrial archive to the bustling, noisy atmosphere of a photo studio. From the static, monochrome archives of 19th-century factories to the neon-lit, bustling studio of a 1980s Playboy shoot, Farocki tracks how human labor tries to create a 'perfect' look.
This evening is part of Systems for Agitation: A Harun Farocki Retrospective bringing together a selection of Farocki’s films and installations, alongside a series of collaborative events. From 17 April to 24 May.
