Pavilion Shorts: Harun Farocki
Pavilion Shorts: Harun Farocki
Description

This month’s edition of Pavilion Shorts tracks the stylistic and political evolution of Harun Farocki. Spanning from 1960s radicalism to the data-driven 1990s, these four short films reveal Farocki’s transition from a provocateur to a clinical observer of social systems. The selection maps a visual journey from Farocki's raw, black-and-white documentations of the protest era to the graphic, digital precision of the information age.

This evening is part of Systems for Agitation: A Harun Farocki Retrospective bringing together a selection of Farocki’s films and installations, alongside a series of collaborative events. From 17 April to 24 May.

This short film from Farocki’s early years combines a critical perspective on media and image-making with a tribute to collective struggle. An activist film made in the context of the student campaign against the Springer press group.
Inextinguishable Fire

Inextinguishable Fire

Harun Farocki Retrospective | Harun Farocki confronts the viewer with the chemical logic behind napalm and the mutilation it causes. By reconstructing the production processes of Dow Chemical, he shows how the division of labor leads to deadly indifference.
The Taste of Life

The Taste of Life

Harun Farocki Retrospective | In the summer of 1979, Harun Farocki captures fleeting moments in Berlin, from the daily opening and closing of a newsstand to a wedding. Using a long lens, he scans public space in search of the taste of life.

Harun Farocki Retrospective | This short film consists entirely of infographics on migration, sourced from newspapers, schoolbooks, and official publications. This seemingly neutral information is full of one-dimensional clichés that have shaped our perceptions of migrants.
