Festival history
All the time in the world is visualised with the speed of sound and compressed into an animated five-minute documentary. This sounds complicated, but produces a gorgeous spectacle. Data on seismologic activity from the archives of the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh were converted into sound and image to demonstrate how the landscape of Northumbria was shaped over the course of millions of years. Near Abb's Head, a rocky coastal area, so-called Earth Lights appear. This phenomenon is the result of tectonic movements that make the earth's crust vibrate like the skin of a percussion instrument. The compression of mineral crystals produces flashes of electricity and light that travel along faults in the earth's crust. In , we literally see sound travel across the rugged northern English landscape.
