Festival history
The Great Lakes on the border of the United States and Canada contain 20% of the fresh water on the earth's surface. They are currently undergoing rapid change, and not for the better. As the introductory text for the project points out, "Something's not quite right with the water." Worse than that, and as any visitor to will quickly notice, something's very wrong with the water indeed. In distinctly themed sections, the site discusses water-related issues and the problems now threatening the Great Lakes. Each section starts with the words "Water is," followed by subjects such as "Fishing," "Pollution," or "Responsibility." Although users are free to choose their own route through the information, there is a clear structure to the arrangement of the 23 elements comprising : the site first emphasizes the importance of water in our lives and then explores current problems and potential counteractive measures.
