Festival history

While conflict rages on in Ukraine’s eastern border region, daily life continues as normal in the west of the country. Tábor, a remote district in the town of Berehove, is just a stone’s throw from the western border with Hungary. The majority of people living in Tábor are Hungarian-speaking Roma, and they form one of the largest Roma communities in Ukraine.

In patient, observational style, Stanislav Danylyshyn captures the unfolding of everyday life in black-and-white images. Easter is approaching and that’s especially noticeable among the children—the boys are rewarded with Easter eggs for throwing water over the girls. In addition to these details, Tábor presents a way of life whose timelessness is underscored by the richly textured monochrome palette used to sketch their world. It is a world inhabited by archetypal figures: the mother, the father, the child.
