Festival history
When the French Prime Minister, Laurent Fabius, in the film is asked what his feelings are he replies that he feels nervous, but on the other hand puts every confidence in the French scientists who have assured him of a perfectly safe execution of the test. The code-name of this French nuclear test on Mururoa, in the Pacific, is 'Hero' and has a force of 5 kilotons. The reason for the experiment is to guarantee France's nuclear independence. French soldiers are present in great numbers to see that the test is carried out. does not deal with the above- mentioned abstract interests of France but with the reverse: the repression of the local culture by the French presence, the effects on the native people of radio-active contamination and the resistance against the test. The French government reacted rigorously to Greenpeace's act of protest by sinking their ship, the .
