The Broken Moon
Sonam lives in a nomadic community in Spangchen, Kharnak, high in the Himalayas. The community is facing major problems that are directly linked to climate change. These people subsist on the meat and income generated from their cattle, and the grass the cows feed on is becoming scarce. What's more, dermatological problems caused by the sun are on the rise. In hopes of a better future, more and more people are moving to the city, but in reality a life of poverty awaits them there. Sonam's son Dorjay decides to send a letter to the holy Urgain Rinpoche. He invites him to the village for blessings and help, and consults an oracle as well. In often spectacular shots, follows the tough life of the small community and that of Sonam in particular, who desperately tries to defend the traditional way of life but whose own son wants to move to the city. The beauty of the old rituals stands in stark contrast to the nomads' harsh surroundings and the awful conditions in which they live. Time would seem to have stood still, but the traditions that have been carefully preserved are unable to turn around the effects of climate change.
