cutting the cord
Myriam Fuks is a well-known Yiddish-language singer, who now lives in Brussels, but has spent a significant part of her life in Israel too. Myriam had a familiar new Israeli/Jewish background: her parents were Holocaust survivors, her mother a woman who lived in the past, repeating the tales of her horrors over and over. Last year, Myriam was amazed to find out that all this was a lie. Her mother knew a very different Holocaust. She actually lived a good life during the war as a Christian in a small German village. The film follows Myriam as she sets out to understand her mother’s real story, the essence of her truth, and ultimately the meaning of reconciliation. It’s a film about myths, their use and abuse. A victim twice, once in Nazi Germany and again among her own people, this is about the fight for life, the zest to live.
