Festival history
The setting of this documentary is Osijek, a heavily besieged city where the only English speaking unit of the Croatian army has its base. These servicemen often refuse to fight out of idealism or compassion for their fellow human beings. The violent character of the war works like a magnet on the majority of the men. It is the kick of killing, the tension of the moment that clouds their minds: "I want this state, it's like higher than any drug." In many cases, the individual soldier's background or past appears to have influenced his decision to join the fighting. They have lost their place in civilian society. They do not attach much value to life, because it has not brought them much good so far. The group is followed with the camera when doing exercises in the woods and at a number of actions. The individual conversations running parallel to these scenes occasionally give a very disquieting insight in the way of thinking of these volunteers, who were hired to kill.
