In 1959 the Haitian poet René Depestre fled his native country in fear of repression by the regime of dictator 'Papa Doc' Duvalier. The revolutionary poet joined the international communist movement and travelled to Cuba, Moscow and Prague. Later he settled down in the French province. There Depestre developed into one of the greatest French-writing authors of his generation. Recent political changes in Haiti have brought an end to Duvalier's family dictatorship, so the 68-year-old Depestre, whose heart has always remained on Haiti, is faced with the question whether he will return to his motherland. Does he dare to field-test the Haitian dream he has cherished in exile?
