With a video-camera, a dog and a Volkswagen van, filmmaker Ellen Spiro travelled through the American south for one year, curious for the way homo-sexual people lead their lives. The journey leads Spiro through Texas, Arkansas, North and South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and Virginia. The result is the road movie GREETINGS FROM OUT HERE: interviews with well-known and unknown American southerners, as well as events like the Texas Gay Rodeo and a lesbian music festival. Ellen Spiro does not take on the attitude of an outsider but of a cheerful, interested observer. The film breaks down the cliché that only 'rednecks' live in the American south. Over the last decades, a lot has changed here, making a homosexual culture possible.
