Festival history

Ingmar Bergman is one of the most influential filmmakers that Sweden has ever produced. Many of the conflicts between men and women and between parents and children that have been elaborated in his feature films come from private experience. His rigorous upbringing, for example, is an ever recurring theme in his films. In THE BEST INTENTIONS by Bille August and SUNDAY'S CHILDREN by Bergman's son Daniel, both based on scripts by Ingmar Bergman, the unpleasant memories of his youth were already somewhat refined. After FANNY OCH ALEXANDER, KARINS ANSIKTE is Bergman's last film as a director. Leafing through the family album he composed an affectionate portrait of his mother. At the same time the film presents an idea of the life in a Swedish family between 1889 and 1964. Group photos and family portraits alternate with details of clothes or a face.
