Festival history
In 1968, shortly before the American government decided to begin withdrawing its troops from Vietnam, John Wayne released his Vietnam-themed film . Wayne plays Colonel Kirby, who is sent to South Vietnam with his special unit to "teach the Vietcong a lesson." A critical journalist named Beckworth (David Janssen), who does not believe in interfering in Vietnam's affairs, travels along with him. Wayne, who also co-directed, rejects any criticism of American policy and propagates his pro-Vietnam stance throughout the film. While Wayne's character returns home unscathed - not a scratch on him, even after lots of bloody fighting and a dangerous mission deep into Vietcong territory - Beckworth remains behind in Vietnam. By that time, we have watched Kirby lead his men with courage and expertise, managing to reinforce and secure the army camp. The film was shot in Fort Benning, Georgia, and the filmmakers even replicated the Vietcong's weapons (sharpened bamboo spears, for instance). On the way to Vietnam, one soldier delivers the famous line, "This trip is going to make LSD feel like aspirin."
