Festival history
Director Coline Serreau was responsible for two big film successes in contemporary French cinema: Trois hommes et un couffin and Romuald et Juliette. Her interest in social sex roles, which she jocularly worked out in these films, was also the motive for the documentary Mais qu'est-ce qu'elles veulent? Women from different social backgrounds talk about their problems at home and at work. A farmer's wife tells about her hard life on the farm, which she would have given up a long time ago "if it hadn't been for the children". But also a business man's wife is not really happy with the fact that she has placed her life in the service of her husband's career. These women's portraits are set beside women who are suffering from the traditional image of women. We are introduced to a woman with anorexia, an actress who plays in porn movies and a clergywoman who would like to have her own church. The latter has not given up hope yet: "I like what I've done but I haven't done what I like... But I'm going to do it!"
