The war that began with so much enthusiasm degenerated into a bloodbath in the mud. Human lives did not count, and all sides just kept sending soldiers to the front line. Some were literally crazy with fear, but the generals saw that as childish behaviour. Hundreds of soldiers who no longer dared to fight were brought before the firing squad.
