In DANSEN filmmaker Jan Troell gives his view of dance as an art form that derives its strength from life. The film shows spontaneous children's dances, flamenco dancers, youngsters moving to the sounds of hip-hop music in the subway and archive footage of Isadora Duncan. Dancing is not only presented as a natural activity, but also as a culturally determined statement, with differences in generation and class playing a major role. The film pays attention to feelings of happiness and beauty, but also to hard work and discipline. The rhythm of the film is dictated by Ravel's Bolero.
