SOME DISTANT DAY is an audiovisual essay in which the filmmaker/narrator takes us on an exploratory journey along different aspects of the history and cultural identity of Scotland in past and present. The maker uses a narrative style that is reminiscent of Chris Marker in his film SANS SOLEIL. The film consists of four chapters, and takes us from John Knox's Reformation and the Industrial Revolution to our time. The images recapture major historical events and small personal memories, and subsequently reflect on them in poetic, dramatised or almost abstract scenes. In voiceover, we hear the narrator asking himself questions and philosophising about the role that religion, work, time and memory play in the way we people shape our personal identities.
