Documentary becomes part of fiction in this interactive novella for mobile devices. The story, which concerns the disappearance of a friendly spirit named September, is told using thousands of ultrashort fragments of video shot by users all over the world—including you. These off-the-cuff clips are anonymized and then incorporated into the emotional fabric of Motto, creating a narrative that is part ghost story and part treasure hunt.

The building blocks of Motto will find their way into the real world over the course of IDFA 2020. Passersby on the streets of Amsterdam may encounter tiny interventions in daily life: friendly invitations that are gateways into the digital experience that is Motto. While the narrative is rooted in centuries-old storytelling traditions, it speaks the language of the contemporary internet, which is dominated by short videos on Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. Motto transforms these into a disco ball that reflects your own experiences back at you as distorted shards.
