Jury report: IDFA DocLab Competition for Digital Storytelling

As the Digital Storytelling Jury we’ve been blessed to experience and impressive and very diverse group of projects. The works we’ve looked at encompass AR, VR, AI, the web, and mobile phone platforms. They draw on genres including documentary, games, memoir, and the novel. We’ve found them by turns moving, funny, informative, and thought-provoking.

We were looking for a project that was original, that was ambitious; that made apt use of creative technology. We were seeking a project in which form and content were nicely intertwined, that offered a satisfying user experience, and that had something significant to say about the world we live in today. Our chosen project does all this and more. Reinterpreting a classic American novel, it makes a contribution to a longstanding debate—asking what becomes of authorship in the age of AI.

Finally, it delighted us that this deeply digital project came to us in material form, as a beautiful book which will spark many conversations—a book called 1 the Road by Ross Goodwin, this year’s winner of the IDFA DocLab Award for Digital Storytelling.
