While families are often associated with conviviality, support, and reliability, they can also be complicated, carry secrets, or be very
outspokenly controversial. This can produce stories of all shapes and
sizes; from social, political, criminal, to interpersonal stories.
Director Laura Plancarte who has a background in visual and fine arts,
has dealt with families and communities in her work, such as in the
award-winning Hermanos (2017) and Tierra Caliente (2015). In her most
recent film: Non Western, selected in IDFA’s Best of Fest section,
follows a Native/Non Native couple in Montana, ahead of their wedding.
We see the challenges their interracial family face, and through their
struggles we witness an on-going chain of oppression, exploring how
gender and identity issues affect different generations in Montana. In
this session, Dutch director Tom Fassaert (A Family Affair, 2015) will
talk with Laura Plancarte about her approach to the families in her
films, and how she interweaves all this in her highly cinematographic
work. How did the filming process influence the dynamics within the
family or community?
This session is hosted by Videoland. Videoland and IDFA join forces in the collaboration Videoland Academy.
