The War in Afghanistan has come to an end after almost twenty years. It’s most tangible legacy for soldiers and civilians alike is its destruction, both physical and mental.
Clement Boland is one such victim. Having served in Helmand province more than a decade ago, he now undergoes a gardening-based therapy for his trauma. Five Scenes documents Boland’s experiences of war, as well as his subsequent trauma. The film attempts to convey a soldier’s subjective experience of the strangeness of conflict, and the way his damaged imagination imposes a fragmented chronology onto the idyllic landscape of his native Sussex.
