Dementia and Then
For two years, Ireen van Ditshuyzen filmed the lives of five people with dementia of different ages, different backgrounds, and with different forms of this disease. We see how the diagnosis of a 58-year-old man is made on the basis of various examinations and tests conducted at the VUmc Alzheimercentrum: a tragic moment followed some time later by the triumph of running a half-marathon in 90 minutes. A pianist, age 71, is admitted to a nursing home where she rediscovers happiness by playing the piano. For an elderly couple, questions surrounding the end of life have become urgent. They and their children, doctor and case manager search for the right words and choices. Dementia and Then is an attempt to have us look at life with dementia in a different way: not just at the disease but, more importantly, at the possibilities of maintaining quality of life by means of music, light and movement. We see innovations in scientific research and care.
