IDFA Meets Bo Hanna: Complex Realities

IDFA Meets goes online! On Thursday, May 28, join us and our guest curator Bo Hanna for a live screening and discussion from the comfort of your couch. Together we’ll watch the short documentary film I Signed the Petition, followed by a conversation with special guests Tessa Boerman and Natascha van Weezel.

IDFA Meets is IDFA's new event series for an emerging generation of documentary viewers. This year, five young guest curators are given free rein to put together an (online) film event. Freelance journalist and presenter Bo Hanna has the honor of getting us started.

How do you find your way in a world that is less black and white than some would have you believe? How do you take a stand in a world full of contradictions, complexities, and imperfections—yet a world that is becoming increasingly polarized at the same time?  And is this uncertainty a burden, or should you see it as an opportunity to see the world in its true colours?

On May 28, join us online for an in-depth discussion on the interplay between conflicting identities, political responsibility, and finding nuance in divisive times. We'll stream I Signed the Petition in full, after which Natascha van Weezel and Tessa Boerman will join the conversation. Additionally, we'll watch some clips from feature film Oriented.

    I Signed the Petition

Filmmaker Mahdi Fleifel wakes up one morning in Berlin with butterflies in his stomach. Last night he signed a petition calling to boycott Israel, but was that a good idea after all? As a Palestinian, he’s already treated with suspicion. A phone conversation with a friend hits the nail on the head: As Palestinians in exile, they don’t have the luxury of keeping a distance, he says. “You’re already in it, know what I mean? Whether or not you sign a piece of paper doesn’t actually matter.”
