After a year of lockdowns, where does IDFA stand? In the new online magazine IDFA 2020: A Year in Review, our staff consider this urgent question from a variety of perspectives. From pushing the envelope in our festival programming and embracing new documentary formats to supporting filmmakers and film professionals in entirely new ways, the first year of the pandemic put us to the test. But sometimes, testing is what we do best.
“Experiments were conducted at all levels, and decisions were made that had no precedent. There was hardly any time to test. Going live was the test. With that unstoppable energy, we powered through several years’ worth of developments in only one year. […] In 2020, we reinvented both ourselves and the festival after which we are named. We very courageously took a leap forward and surfaced again,” writes Executive Director Cees van ‘t Hullenaar.
In addition to these opening words, the magazine offers interviews with Artistic Director Orwa Nyrabia, Deputy Director Isabel Arrate Fernandez, Head of Industry Adriek van Nieuwenhuijzen, Head of New Media Caspar Sonnen, and Education Program Manager Marije Veenstra.
