In show of their support for the people of Ukraine, cinemas across the country are screening Sergei Loznitsa's critically acclaimed film Donbass starting March 3. All proceeds from the screenings will go to giro 999 of the Refugee Foundation, which provides aid to refugees from Ukraine.
Released in 2018, Donbass is a mosaic film about the titular region of Eastern Ukraine where a hybrid war wreaks havoc under Russian rule. By spreading fake news and hate campaigns, populations are deliberately pitted against each other, resulting in a spiral of violence that is portrayed on screen through re-enacted scenes and found footage.
Loznitsa also made Maidan in 2014, about the then-current protests against corrupt Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. In 2016, IDFA dedicated a retrospective to Loznitsa, who curated a Top 10 program of his favorite films in addition to holding a public master class.
