Who Wants to be a President?
Igor Mirkovic & Rajko Grlic, Igor Mirkovic, Rajko Grlic
Croatia
Two directors, the famous feature film maker Rajko Grliæ and TV journalist Igor Mirkoviæ, filmed the political battle that started at the end of the year 2000, just a few days before the president of Croatia, Tudjman, ‘the father of the nation’, passed away. They followed the developments of the last election campaign from beginning to end and talked to all the main candidates, from the left-wing to extreme right-wing parties. Spending many hours with each candidate, sometimes at secret, private meetings, the film gives the audience an inside view of the personalities of the politicians behind the scenes, but also of the socio-economic situation in Croatia today. The film also raises the question of why people need to have big authorities in politics, why they create ‘fathers’ and ‘leaders’ for themselves, as was the case with the late Franjo Tudjman, who was worshipped as a semi-deity.
