Festival history
Thirteen-year-old Abigail has lived in a refugee camp in Suriname for her entire life. During the war in her country, shortly before she was born, Pokigron, her village in the interior, was set ablaze and her family fled to Paramaribo. Illuminated by the dim light of an oil lamp, the girl explains that she leads a life without electricity or water. This is especially hard at night, when she has to do her homework. Although she tries to make the best of the situation, Abigail finds it odd that deep in the interior there is electricity and water in abundance, but not in the city.
