Festival history
American Dream is set in the mid-eighties in the industrial town of Austin, Minnesota. A town where the employees of Hormel - like most Americans - believe that their work will be rewarded with a 'middle-class' life standard, as was the case over the past seventy years. When the Hormel company imposes a considerable wage reduction on the fifteen hundred workers of the meat packaging plant, they are jolted awake from their American dream. American Dream is more than just a story about wages and wage policy. The Hormel employeesnot only fight for their labour union and for decent wages, but also for a traditional way of life for standards which are threatened by the economic instability.
