Festival history
In THE LONG WAY HOME Mark Jonathan Harris (commissioned by the Simon Wiesenthal Center) examines the fate of the tens of thousands of refugees who survived World War II and who, often illegally, tried to set out for the Jewish fatherland. One of the main issues of the film is the way in which the world turned its back on these fugitives in the period 1945-1948. By alternating rare archive footage with recently shot stories and recollections by Jewish refugees, the film also bridges the gap with the present: to outcasts in Bosnia, Africa and Central America the situation of the Jews in WW II is still all too familiar.
