Festival history
In 1971 Dmitri Todorov robbed a bank in Munich, in the course of which people were taken hostage. In the rescue operation by the police one hostage and Todorov's co? robber were killed. This incident with its tragic outcome sent a ripple of horror through German public opinion. In his trial, which was closely followed by the media, Todorov was sentenced to life imprisonment. In 1993 he was released. Todorov ? ein gangsterfilm follows the now 48?year?old man for one year, starting on the day of his release. How does somebody hold out in freedom after having been imprisoned for twenty?two years? Will he turn back to crime? The film also focusses on the hysteria that arose around the 'crime of the century' and which resulted in 'justice of vengeance', which turned Todorov from accused into victim. The film is a portrait of a literate man with a rich sense of humour, who managed to survive the prison regime thanks to his fantasy.
