Festival history
Alternatives for diesel and gasoline abound. Even Henry Ford developed an alcohol-fuelled engine for one of his models. But in many countries, the political will to stimulate the use of biofuels is still lacking. One of the champions of this development and the director of this documentary is the American Josh Tickell. Years ago, Tickell made a tour across the United States in his bio-van to point out the advantages of biofuels to people. With Fuel he wants to reach an even wider public. The documentary only obliquely addresses the disadvantages of fossil fuels, like the "cancer alleys" that are found in the vicinity of large oil refineries, where inhabitants develop forms of cancer more often than average. Fuel especially shows the concrete results achieved in the field of biofuel. And it illustrates that not every government thwarts these developments: Sweden and Germany substantially stimulate its use. In New York, trucks belonging to Tristate Biodiesel stop at fast-food restaurants to collect the waste cooking oil and sell it as biofuel. A company in San Francisco makes algae produce oil. The solution is here, Tickell says. Now all we have to do is want it.
