Festival history

All his life, director Lindsay Anderson was a critical observer of the artistic and cultural scene of London. His own work was characterised by the discrepancy between his upper class background and the merciless way in which he exposed the shortcomings of traditional English society. As co?founder of the film magazine Sequence in the late forties, he gave film criticism an invigorating impulse. Later on, when making his own films, he applied his own basic assumptions by aiming at a way of filming which could convey the feelings of people from all social layers, not only the urban middle class. This made him the instigator of the so?called free cinema. Two months after the shootings for Lucky Man Lindsay Anderson died.
