The golden-coloured, unusual image of three elderly men, lying next to each other like frozen in three white baths in a dirty washhouse, looks like the overture to a new choreography by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, but it is an excerpt from the visual poem UOSTAS by Audrius Stonys. The Lithuanian director belongs to the generation of young filmmakers that have clustered round director Sharunas Bartas. Like Bartas, they let silence come to life in their work. In this short introduction that precedes UOSTAS, Stonys explains that the silence in his work should be seen as a reaction to the depletion of speech in the former Soviet Union, where language only produced systematic lies or an endless, compulsive repetition of the truth.
