Festival history
Sex Slaves is a gripping documentary exposé into the shadowy, multi-billion dollar world of sex trafficking. The film takes us to the villages of Moldova and Ukraine, where girls are lured and then sold and forced into prostitution in underground brothels and discotheques all over Europe. Often forced to service up to 20 customers a day, these girls are beaten, tortured, threatened and sold from one pimp to another. The film follows Viorel, a Ukrainian man whose pregnant wife is sold for $1,000 by a mutual "friend." Hidden cameras accompany Viorel to Turkey as he tries to find the pimp who has his wife. After days of desperate efforts, Viorel poses as a trafficker and sets out to buy her back. Bienstock interviews traffickers, police officers and victims, and digs deep into the world of the white sex slave trade. Part cinéma vérité, part investigation, Sex Slaves explores the global trafficking problem through personal stories and unfettered access to traffickers and the people used as human chattel.
