Festival history
Felix travels by car to Medjugorje, a village in Bosnia where an apparition of the Virgin Mary has occurred. After a series of setbacks, Felix hopes to clear up his life by making this pilgrimage. Because he cannot drive himself, he is constantly looking for new drivers who can take him a little bit further south. En route, the different fellow-travellers explain to him how they try to get a grip on their lives. The two films PILGRIM EX MACHINA and PILGRIM OF DENIAL have the same spiritual origin. Duro Toomato and Martin Hansen developed the project with an open structure and started out together to shoot the film. In the editing stage, the footage shot assumed a life of its own and the two makers saw two different stories. They decided not to iron out the differences, but to make two short films, which now stand cheek by jowl.
