Owing to the fact that director Mikael Wiström and his crew had acquired ample experience with the Latin American refugee issue, they had no difficulties finding the central figures for EXILE - EN MORS BERÄTTELSE. The story of a family from El Salvador, trying to flee their war-ravaged country and to build a new life in Sweden, has resulted in a highly dramatic film. The protagonist is Mama Chela, mother of seven children, who watches over the well-being of her family members as a loving and at times tyrannical empress. Being a pious Catholic woman she was torn inside when she saw that her children were prepared to fight for socialist and atheistic ideals. The events in the film are embedded between Mama Chela's departure from El Salvador and her arrival in Sweden, where she is reunited with her children.
